Bugey

Argis

Bugey is a small, little-known wine region of 490 ha between Jura and Savoy. Located at the end of a lost valley in this superb region, the vineyards are planted on a south-west facing slope at the foot of the 200m high cliff ‘Roche de Narse’ overlooking the Albarine river. The vigneron Luc Bauer produces his wines in an old barn rehabilitated into a cellar; the former agricultural engineer started his small 2 ha winery in 2012 with the objective of producing authentic wines reflecting their original terroir and respecting the environment. Luc follows some principles as guidelines: respect the environment, water quality and air quality, respect to the health of the people who make the wine and to those who drink it. This human aspect which consists in wanting to rehabilitate a true cultural heritage: to revitalize the Argis hillside region which is becoming desertified, thanks to an innovative and original activity.
His vineyards are split over several sites. The largest is a southwest-facing slope in the shadow of the Roche de Narse. There, afternoon sun drenches the rocky, white-chalk soil, which then captures heat to keep the vines warm into the night. He’s a firm practitioner of biodynamics, which he describes as an evidence-based methodology that involves all living organisms in an environment and the energies they exert on one another. He uses preparations 500 and 501 and syncs his vineyard and cellar work to the lunar calendar… but only because he has only ever seen positive results. His cuvées are the expression of a single grape on a single parcel, giving clear and precise wines which deserve to be known.
